Velvet Revival

Velvet is the fabric of the season!
High-fashion brands
such as Rebecca Taylor, Lanvin, and Gucci
were noted as using large amounts of velvet in their Fall/Winter 2012 collections.

Not only is velvet a historically luxe material,
but the texture and drape make it a wonderful fabric to wear.

(Sam Edelman boots $32, vintage Glentara scarf $10, belt $8, Betsy Johnson dress size small $56)

Our favorite way to wear velvet is in rich, jewel-tone hues – like this emerald green Betsy Johnson dress. Punk up a fit-‘n-flair skater dress with some wedge booties and a plaid scarf.

(Madden Girl boots $20, Jessica Kagan Cushman bracelet $40, Ella Moss top $24, Gap leggings $8)

We just love the texture of crushed velvet; and when dressing in darker shades for cooler weather, texture is key to creating visual interest in an outfit. Feeling lazy or just want to be comfortable? Go for these Gap leggings rather than your baggy sweatpants! Cozy can be cute.

(Aldo pumps $20, Trende Femme broach $29, J/J by Julie Haus top size extra small $64, Alice and Olivia shorts $46)

Something about black velvet just exudes sexiness. We prefer black velvet shorts over a LBD for a sexy take on menswear. Paired with a graphic top and pops of red, this look is perfect for a night out on the town.

(Stuart Weitzman wedge size 7.5 $78, vintage earrings $10, Nougat skirt size 2 $68, Marc Jacobs blazer size 4 $194 NEW)

If you’re unsure about going all the way with velvet, try a little velvet trim. We love the accents on this Marc Jacobs blazer; it’s the perfect balance between feminine and edgy.

Gilded Age

One of our favorite trends of Fall 2012
is characterized by the heavy use of gold.
Seen at Dolce & Gabbana,
black and gold were paired together
for a truly stunning effect.

(Salvatore Ferragamo flats size 7.5 $90, earrings $12, AKA sweater size medium $78, J. Crew skirt $26)

Although typically considered an evening look, the black&gold combination can boost your mood during the day. Paired with cream, the color combination becomes less sever and easier to wear. You’ll literally radiate as the sun hits your ensemble and reflects back onto your environment.

(J. Crew heels $28, Good Girls Studio earrings $24, Ann Taylor jacket $32, Per Se dress size 6 $138 NEW)

Just as kings and queens wore crowns of gold and sat in gilded chairs, this luminescent metal has the ability to command attention and respect. Thus, this trend is perfect for the office; whether you have an important presentation or want to celebrate your promotion. If you’re worried about being too bold for the workplace, opt for a more muted gold or just gold accents.

(Charles David mules size 11 $98, watch $24, vintage Jonden top $20, Alice and Olivia pants size 2 $58)

The same idea applies to a business casual outfit. This is great for those evenings when you want to go for drinks after a long day at the office. A funky gold top is subtle under a black blazer, but once the blazer is removed and you change into edgy heels you’ll feel totally revived and ready to flirt.

(Michael Kors heels size 8.5 $80, necklace $14, Haute Hippie jacket size small $228, Saks Fifth Avenue top size medium $64, Piazza Sempione pants European size 42 $240 NEW)

To rock this trend in an evening ensemble, the trick is to balance low-key items with glitzy pieces. You don’t want to look like you’re stuck in the 70’s! Sleek pants and a tough jacket add edge to a gold sequined top. Go minimal with accessories, since the gold is jewelry enough – don’t you just love the gold-accented heel and platform of these Michael Kors pumps?! You will truly be a star in this trend.

Colors of the Season

Pretty soon the leaves will start changing hue,
from vibrant greens to warm reds and oranges.
Similarly, this season’s wardrobe
will change color pallet from that of Spring and Summer.

Taking cues from Fashion Week F/W ’12,
we’ve created monochromatic ensembles
focused around the It colors of the season.

(Donald J. Pliner mules size 8.5 $78, vintage Bobbie Jerome handbag $50, J. Crew belt $14, locket necklace $28, Rare Editions dress $14)

Forget the popular pastels of Spring and go for a rich color such as burgundy. Variations on this hue, like maroon and oxblood, create a dynamic ensemble when paired together. This look is sultry and sophisticated, and works well on most complexions.

(Salvatore Ferragamo loafers size 7 $98, Kooba purse $298 NEW, Good Girls Studio necklace $38, Alexander Wang sweater size medium $116, Theory skirt size 2 $52)

Whoever still thinks you can’t wear white after Labor Day is stuck in the past! Winter white was all over the runway for Fall/Winter, seen at Peter Som and The Row. When recreating this look, choose softer whites rather than bleach-white.

(Coach heels SOLD, vintage 1960’s handbag $42, Good Girls Studio ring $16, necklace $22, 7 for All Mankind top $44, Wilson’s Leather skirt $42)

High-shine black is the go-to for an evening look. Seen at DKNY and Theory, this trend is sleek, edgy, and the ultimate cool. Try layering sequins, patent leather, or slick black lycra textiles for a Matrix-inspired ensemble.

(Maraisusa heels $48, vintage 1960’s handbag $48, vintage belt $32, Etro jacket size 42 $298, Lorick top size 2 $70, J. Crew pants $20)

One of our favorite color combos for F/W ’12 is midnight blue and black. The pairing is subtle yet dynamic, and perfect for day or night. Midnight is the new navy when it comes to this season’s neutrals. Finish off an ensemble of midnight and black with accents of silver or pearl.

Themes for the Season

With Spring/Summer 2013 Fashion Week going on,
it’s easy to let your mind wander ahead to what you’ll be wearing come May.
But snap back to the present!
Autumn is here and it’s time to sport those Fall/Winter trends.

To remind you of what was on the runway last Spring
(during Fall/Winter 2012 Fashion Week)
we’ve created looks that exemplify the major themes set for the season.

(Tila March boots size 6 $230 NEW, Stada handbag $24, earrings $12, Smythe jacket size 2 $248 NEW, J. Crew shirt $16, 7 for All Mankind jeans $50)

A favorite look for Fall, Military-inspired gets a modern make-over with sleek lines and subtle accessories. Gone are the days of heavy metal, glamed-up military looks like those of Balenciaga. Take a cue from Jason Wu, Victoria Beckham, and Elizabeth & James for a sophisticated soldier ensemble.

(Lilly Pulitzer flats size 7.5 $72 NEW, clutch $16, vintage earrings $10, Ann Taylor jacket size 8 $68 NEW, Elliot Lauren top $20, Ann Taylor Pants $42 NEW)

The pant suit is so in this season! In the office and out on the town, a suit is the go-to uniform for Autumn. Forget the boring black of the corporate world, this season’s suit is alive with rich colors and funky accents. Look to Prada, Louis Vuitton, and (of course) Chanel for inspiration.

(J. Crew boots $46, Gap handbag $28 NEW, vintage Miss New York coat with scarf $68, Ralph Lauren shirt $38, J. Crew jeans $34)

This winter, Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren are taking us on a hunting trip! Channel the great outdoors with bold plaids and herringbone prints. Cozy textiles, like wool and flannel, will make you want to rent a cabin for the weekend and cook smores over a fire.

(Cole Haan flats $56, vintage 1950’s handbag $68, broach $8, vintage lucite earrings $12, vintage 1970’s coat $48, Gap sweater $24, Tocca dress $42)

“Granny Chic” is the name given to the newest trend for fall/winter ’12. Raid your grandmother’s closet for vintage broaches, handbags, and coats. Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta are on the forefront of this style, making shawls and tweed cool again.

Strike a Cord

As we transition into Autumn
pants become key in any outfit.
But instead of wearing jeans every day until Spring returns,
take a break from denim and try corduroys!
We love the great texture and various colors of ‘cords,’
and they’re easy to wear for any occasion.

(J. Crew heels size 8 $110 NEW, Lucky Accessories earrings $39, CAbi top $40 NEW, J. Crew corduroys $40 NEW)

For an every-day look, we love colored cords. Paired with a flowy top and cute heels, this ensemble can take you from class to a lunch date!

(Jeffrey Campbell wedges size 7.5 $75 NEW, hoops $16, Abercrombie & Fitch belt $28, Michael by Michael Kors top $30, PaperDenim&Cloth corduroys $50)

Army green is one of the trending colors for fall. Style this hue with natural elements; we love the play on prints between the organic design of this Michael by MK top and the leopard print on these killer Jeffrey Campbell wooden wedges.

(Jeffrey Campbell flats $38, Artwear by Natis earrings $20, Sundance top $36, Aventura Clothing corduroys $22)

For those who get warm easily, try going heavy on bottom and sheer on top. A lightweight blouse will keep you cool while you run errands or tend to work, while the cords are comfy and keep you in the spirit for Fall.

(Liz Carine heels $44, Express necklace $12, T by Alexander Wang top $32, J. Crew corduroys $24)

Corduroys are not just for casual wear. For an evening out on the town pair a darker shade of corduroys, like this deep gray-blue pair from J. Crew, with a slinky top. Have fun with the color combination but keep the silhouette sleek to avoid adding extra bulk. Metallic heels and accessories help to glam up the look. We think this outfit is perfect for trying new restaurants on First Fridays!

Fashion Week!

New York Fashion Week has begun,
with Milan and Paris to follow.
Raleigh is following suit
with FashionSPARK this Thursday
and JewelrySPARK on Friday.
(Our very own Good Girls Studio will be at JewelrySPARK!)

So what does one wear to such a stylish event?
Something fabulous, of course!

(Balenciaga boots size 8.5 $260, Good Girls Studio ring $24, bracelet $16, Hobo bag $38, Alberto Makali vest $44, 291 From Vince CA shirt $30, Bebe leggings $24)

This look channels the great Karl Lagerfeld with an ensemble composed of black, white, and heavy metal. It’s simple but edgy – and check out those shoes!

(Pour La Victorie heels size 7 $88, Saola earrings $53, Whiting & Davis clutch $68, Alice + Olivia dress size small $120)

The Minimalist Fashionista goes for texture rather than color and layering. We love the basket-weave detailing on this Alice + Olivia dress, mimicked in the Pour La Victorie heels. Sometimes less really is more.

(Beverly Feldman heels size 8 $120 NEW, Marc Berstein belt $74, vintage Whiting & Davis handbag $98, Madison Marcus top size medium $130 NEW, The Collection skirt $22)

We call this look “Sophisticated Edgy.” You don’t have to show skin or wear everything skin-tight to be fashion-forward. We love the play on prints and texture between all elements of this ensemble.

(Jessica Simpson heels size 7.5 $48 NEW, hoops $10, clutch $10, Aqua dress size 8 $58)

If when you hear “bold” you think “color” then wear a dress that conveys your style mantra. We’re loving this deep cobalt blue as an alternative to black for a night out. Keep accessories to a minimum to avoid going over-board.

Whether in NYC or the Triangle, during Fashion Week or a normal week, work your personal style and feel fabulous!

It’s Hopscotch Time! – for the Girls
