Valentines Day for the Single Lady

As we move in to February
we begin to see more pink, red, and heart shapes everywhere we go.

If you’re single,
Valentine’s Day may not be too exciting,
but that doesn’t have to be the case.

Whether you’re just going out with girlfriends
for a night on the town
or are meeting up with an online date match,
embrace the love that’s in the air.

If you’re planning an evening out with friends, and maybe some harmless flirting, a little red dress is sure to bring you the attention you deserve. Tone it down with nude pumps and a simple necklace so you don’t feel too done-up. Don’t obsess over getting a guy, take time to celebrate loving yourself!

You’re a self-proclaimed workaholic and simply have no time to fool around with the dating scene; but your friends think you need some fun and have set you up with a blind date during your lunch break. Wear an outfit that can easily transition from professional to casually put together, like a tailored black blazer over a pretty pink romper.

Are you meeting your crush for coffee on February 14th? Play it cool with a low-key ensemble like jeans and a cardi. Of course, you can still be festive with a splash of pink. Your no-fuss presentation will let your inner beauty shine through and he’ll be sure to ask for a second date.

Your BFF has invited you to her Valentines Day party and won’t take no for an answer. So who cares if you don’t have a plus one? Use your feminine charm to entertain the crowd and have the gentlemen come to you! Nothing says confident and fabulous like a bold, full skirt and a little menswear-inspired blouse. You’ll be the Holly Golightly of 2013.

The Feminine Cardigan

Okay, ladies,
we all know how to layer using the wardrobe staple cardigan.
But how do you take it from 1950’s conservative
to modern and marvelous?

(Gucci heels size 39.5 $280 NEW, Good Girls Studio earrings $44, Kimchi + Blue cardigan $16, Carolina Herrera skirt size 4 $248)

(Gucci heels size 39.5 $280 NEW, Good Girls Studio earrings $44, Kimchi + Blue cardigan $16, Carolina Herrera skirt size 4 $248)

If you like the mid-century modern aesthetic, amp up the style with an unexpected print! A monochromatic brown ensemble is super sophisticated, but a pop of cheetah print makes a fashion-forward statement.

(Kate Spade heels size 7 $84, Good Girls Studio earrings $32, H&M cardigan $20, J. Crew shirt $16, A.M.M skirt $38)

Want to put a spin on the classic cardi? Take it back in time! We love the 1920’s Art Deco influences in this outfit; geometric prints, stripes, and tassel earrings. Combined with a sunny yellow, these muted tones and clashing patterns become one in a beautiful look for daytime activities.

(Loeffler Randall heels size 8.5 $120, Jills Jewels earrings $20, Knitted & Knotted by Anthropology cardigan size small $48 NEW, Sin Choi dress size small $88)

A cardigan can have more uses than keeping you warm; it can easily tone down a LBD to a more wearable day outfit. Contrast a flowy, silky dress with an arts&crafts style cardigan, like this crocheted piece from Anthropology. You’ll look pretty and stylish without seeming too dressed up.

(Sigerson Morison booties size 8.5 $98, earrings $14, belt $8, See by Chloe cardigan size 6 $178 NEW, Kill City jeans size 28 $50)

There’s no rule saying a cardigan must be styled prim and proper. Have fun with color by layering a printed cardigan over a similar-shade blouse! Leaving the cardigan open shows more of the top and creates a slimming effect. If you feel like your waist needs to be defined, throw on a skinny belt. Just remember to keep your accessories neutral so you don’t look too clownish.

The Manly Cardigan

As Raleigh weather continues to fluctuate
one must do some strategic layering.

That’s where a cardigan comes in hand!
Put it over your shirt, over your sweater, and/or under your coat.
Keep it on if it’s cool; take it off if it’s not.

The versatility of this piece makes it a wardrobe staple,
but how does a guy keep from looking like he’s trying to hard?

An easy way to rock a cardigan is over a simple T. We love the athletic look of stripes in a neutral color scheme (above). If you’re feeling bold with color, a cool coral paired with navy feels nautical and Ivy League prep (right). Both looks are perfect as the weather begins to warm up!

If you consider yourself a fashionist-o, try mixing colors and prints! The trick is to have one print and pull out the least-dominant hues as your accents (bow tie and cardigan). This look is sharp and smart, perfect for class!

For an evening out, pair a charcoal shirt with a dark neutral cardigan. Not only will you avoid being cold in the restaurant or movie theater, but you’ll come off as more of a romantic than a guy trying to act tough (girls love that, trust us!)

The Queen of Hearts

It’s almost that time of year
for high school winter formals.
For those at Sanderson, Millbrook, and Leesville it’s called Winterfest,
Athens Drive has the Glass Slipper Ball,
and the Broughton students call it Queen of Hearts.

In the spirit of things
we’ve styled four looks inspired by this Valentines-themed occasion.

(Pour La Victorie heels size 8 $72, Erin Cole earrings $68, Moyna handbag $84 NEW, Sophia Tolli dress size 6 $105 NEW)

(Pour La Victorie heels size 8 $72, Erin Cole earrings $68, Moyna handbag $84 NEW, Sophia Tolli dress size 6 $105 NEW)

Hot pink is such a fun color: amp it up with metallic heels and a vibrant clutch! A sophisticated wrap will have you obeying school dress code, if need be.

(Giuseppe Zanotti mules size 7 $98, Lucie earrings $74 NEW, Mellow World handbag $14 NEW, Entice Evening dress size 8 $75 NEW)

Want to feel pretty in pink on this special evening? You’ll look like a 1930’s film starlet with rhinestone accents and Art Deco heels!

(Dolce & Gabbana heels size 8 $158, earrings $8, vintage Whiting&Davis handbag $68, Mon Cheri Evenings dress size 6 $75 NEW)

If you’re just not a pink girl, try magenta. This slightly purple hue is super cool and works well with silver tones. We’re obsessed with this hi-lo hemline and knife pleats: so chic!

(Alice & Olivia heels size 6 $148 NEW, Judith Jack marcasite earrings $34, eelskin clutch SOLD, Nicole Miller dress size 0 $98 NEW)

(Alice & Olivia heels size 6 $148 NEW, Judith Jack marcasite earrings $34, eelskin clutch SOLD, Nicole Miller dress size 0 $98 NEW)

If you are the bell of the ball, turn heads in a vivacious red dress! If other ladies on the court are also rocking the shade, stand out with edgy accessories; like killer black heels, studded marcasite earrings, and a sleek eelskin clutch.

But most importantly, have fun!

A Presidential Occasion

The Inaugural Ball is in DC this Friday;
what are you wearing?!

In a patriotic spirit,
we’ve styled four looks worthy of the event.

(Jimmy Choo heels size 9.5 $240, Good Girls Studio earrings $22, vintage handbag $40, Sophia Tolli dress size 6 $75 NEW)

(Jimmy Choo heels size 9.5 $240, Good Girls Studio earrings $22, vintage handbag $40, Sophia Tolli dress size 6 $75 NEW)

This gold ensemble reminds us of the stars on the flag: its sleek, elegant, and just a little bit flashy. You’re sure to be the belle of the ball in this dress!

(Jeffrey Campbell heels $38, earrings $24, vintage clutch $28, Montage by Mon Cheri dress size 8 (call for price))

Cornflower blue is a refreshing change from the range of neutrals that prevail at such occasions. Complement the color with pearlescent accessories and feminine details.

(Jimmy Choo heels size 6 $140, Trende Femme earrings $25, vintage handbag $28, B2 dress size XS $78)

(Jimmy Choo heels size 6 $140, Trende Femme earrings $25, vintage handbag $28, B2 dress size XS $78)

For a more modern take on a gala gown, go for something simple and stream-lined. This dress is cool and sophisticated, without being too fussy or seeming matronly. Handmade earrings add a quirky element to the ensemble that also makes for a great conversation starter!

(Chanel heels size 10 $220, earrings $20, vintage Whiting & Davis handbag $98, Alex Evenings dress size 8 $68)

(Chanel heels size 10 $220, earrings $20, vintage Whiting & Davis handbag $98, Alex Evenings dress size 8 $68)

If you prefer a darker hue, navy is the new black. This dress exudes sexy in a nonchalant manner with a draped neck and back. Paired with unexpected black accessories you definitely won’t blend in with the crowd.

Local Designer of the Month – Good Girls Studio

One of our New Year’s resolutions
is to tell you about a designer that can be frequently found in the shop
in our Designer of the Month post.
To go along with this idea,
we thought we’d also feature a local designer each month,
of either apparel or jewelry,
so you can learn about artists in the area,
how they got started,
and what makes them special.

Our first Designer of the Month goes to
Johanna Ely of Good Girls Studio!

Johanna began her jewelry line 2007,
creating one-of-a-kind pieces using revamped vintage finds.
Her line has been sold at Revolver since 2009
and her latest styles, featuring reused bullet shells,
are practically shooting off the shelves!

L-R: "Chain of Love" $36, "Smoke & Mirrors" $44, "Railroaded" $24, "Lark" $22, "Soldier On" $34

L-R: “Chain of Love” $36, “Smoke & Mirrors” $44, “Railroaded” $24, “Lark” $22, “Soldier On” $34

We love the idea of recycling materials, and so does Johanna! Good Girls Studio has been featured at Redress Raleigh and fashionSpark; local events that focus on sustainable fashion.

L-R: "Hot Mess #25" $56, "Hot Mess #26" $56, "Love Drunk" $36, "Rain Drops" $44

L-R: “Hot Mess #25” $56, “Hot Mess #26” $56, “Love Drunk” $36, “Rain Drops” $44

We also love the overall aesthetic of Good Girls Studio: while there’s something for everyone, the pieces maintain a lovely balance between feminine and edgy. Don’t be surprised if you find bullet shells next to antique rhinestones!

L-R: "Diva" $18, "Flower Power" $14, "Black Deeds" $16, "Blue Moon" $18, "Buzzed" $20

L-R: “Diva” $18, “Flower Power” $14, “Black Deeds” $16, “Blue Moon” $18, “Buzzed” $20

Not only does Johanna ensure that everyone will love something from Good Girls Studio, she also offers a broad price range. Her statement necklaces can reach $300 or more, but if you’d like to share Johanna’s unique style with a friend these inexpensive rings are perfect.

L-R: "Bullet Proof" $52, "Persuasion" $120, "Elegant Armor" $98, "Lady Killer" $32, "Locked & Loaded" $38

L-R: “Bullet Proof” $52, “Persuasion” $120, “Elegant Armor” $98, “Lady Killer” $32, “Locked & Loaded” $38

If you find yourself obsessed with Johanna’s work (which is quite likely) but can’t seem to find your ideal piece for sale, fear not! One of the best things about Johanna is her affinity for custom designs. If you have your mother’s, grandmother’s, or great-grandmother’s jewelry tucked away and not being worn, think about reworking elements of old pieces into something new and totally you. This aspect of Good Girls Studio also works well for bridal jewelry: something old and something new made into a piece that will forever remind you of the momentous occasion.

Designer of the Month – Missoni

With the recent news of the missing Missonis,
we decided to pay homage to the fashion family
by naming Missoni Designer of the Month!

For those of you who only know of its partnership with Target,
here is a brief history on this Italian heritage brand:

Ottavio Missoni and his wife, Rosita, founded the company in 1953
and presented their first collection in Milan 1958.
The brand peaked in popularity during the 1970’s
and is known for its use of pattern,
mainly the “flame-stitch” zigzag,
and multitude of vibrant colors.
They also make use of a variety of textiles;
including cotton, rayon, silk, and wool.

These are some of our favorite Missoni pieces available at Revolver:
